In the biological sense, an adult animal or human is one who has fully developed. Within the human realm, adult is a reference to social and legal concepts. Contrary to the concept of a non-adult or "minor" an legal adult is a person who has attained the age of majority and is therefore regarded as independent, self-sufficient, and accountable. The term "major" may be used to describe them. The typical age of attaining the legal age of adulthood is 18 however, definitions can differ based on laws, countries and the level of development in psychological terms.

Adulthood is the time in the human lifespan when an individual has reached maturation in both physical and mental development. Adulthood, as it is commonly understood, starts around the age of either 20 or 21. Following middle age (starting around age 40) is the time to reach the age of old age (around age 60). There are three main levels of adulthood: the early years of adults (18 until mid-30s) mid-adulthood (mid-30s to mid-60s) as well as late adulthood (mid-60s to death). As we enter the initial phases of adulthood (between 20 and 40) then our bodies are at their peak of maturity, even though the weight and height of our bodies might increase a bit. When we reach early adulthood, our physical abilities are at their maximum. These include muscle strength and reaction time.
